September in Berlin: Festival of Lights

As in previous years, from 11 to 20 September, the most important monuments of the city of Berlin will be illuminated providing a spectacular setting for all the inhabitants of the German capital.

Last year, Berlin became the largest open-air gallery in the world. On the occasion of the big event “30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall” the city was transformed into a gigantic stage and told stories that move: expressive, emotional, amusing, surprising, unexpected.

As the organizations pointed out, “The Berlin Festival of Lights thus connects cultures and people all over the world and easily crosses borders and continents – because light speaks all languages”.

The Festival of Lights will transform Berlin´s important and historical monuments during 10 days where everyone is invited to enjoy colorful lights and video projections.

Some of the buildings that will be illuminated are The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral, and the Funkturm, among others.

Lighting art: open to everyone

Many local and international lighting artists use this unique opportunity to project their temporary works of art onto some of the most recognizable buildings in the world, leaving a lasting impression on the spectators.

Illuminations in the Berlin city centre

Most of the monuments participating are in the city centre. They are illuminated daily from 7 pm until midnight, though some projections are of shorter duration and may be displayed only once. The full list of participating buildings, a map and some photos of this year's displays is available at the official Festival of Lights website.

Special events during the Festival of Lights

Aside from the light projections, the Festival of Lights also includes various art and music events as well as guided tours that go by the name LightSeeing: Visitors can tour the highlights of the festival by bus, boat or, of course, on foot. Photography workshops, open house

at selected buildings and charity events are part of the festival too.

Open art fair at the Sony Center

From September 10 to 12 the Sony Center will present 22 national and

international visual artists, who will be selling their paintings, collages,

graphics, sculptures, photographs and objects in person. More info
