a place for contemplation. That´s why is so important to bring awareness of this space especially in this time of crisis. Museums have an important role on our societies, which is a place that protects the culture, history, a place for contemplating beauty, for reflection. A common ground for cultural exchange and dialogue.
As Suay Aksoy, President of ICOM, exposes “The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness on the fact that, museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples”. The main theme for 2020 celebration is: Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion, with the idea of connecting museums with civil society. Celebrating every person that had or will visit a museum. It´s a celebration of artists, enthusiasts, curators, students, etc and the heritage and diversity that is created in a museum as a space of thousands of possibilities, a space of creation and inspiration. It is about the common memory and the diversity that unites us in our differences.
Also, is an invitation for museums to continue working on building a future based on equality, diversity, and inclusion, creating meaningful experiences for people of different origins and backgrounds. As important institutions of society in a time of crisis, museums need to demonstrate their relevance by engaging constructively in cultural and social aspects of society.
With the objective of promoting the activities of museums that are reaching their audiences at home, the IMD created a social media campaign with hashtag #MuseumsAndChill, to promote and to provide other institutions with tools and ideas to do the same. Despite the fact that most museums are still closed to prevent people from getting infected, important technological advances have been made to invite the community to visit museums digitally in various countries of the world.
